Due to delays in clearance and permits, Kenya Airways (KQ) has postponed plans to begin direct flights from Nairobi to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.
This year, KQ planned to begin direct flights to Egal International Airport in Hergeisa, which was intended to improve trade between Kenya and Somaliland.
Hergeisa flights have been halted before KQ meets the Somaliland Aviation Authority’s travel criteria, the airline said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Kenya Airways would like to clarify that plans to launch flights to Hergeisa, Somaliland are currently on hold pending requisite clearance and approvals,” said KQ.
Somaliland is a Somalia breakaway territory.
The country is now pursuing foreign recognition, a development that has heightened tensions with Somalia’s government.
