A new digital platform, the eCUSTOMS app, has been launched at the Busia border post in a collaborative effort by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the UK government, and TradeMark Africa. The system is designed to modernize border operations, significantly cut clearance times, and reduce costs for traders.
Hailed as a “game-changer” for regional trade, the app will enable paperless customs declarations for traders, transporters, and even passengers. Key benefits include:
- Faster Clearance: Expected to reduce cumulative truck queues by 1,200 hours daily at the Busia border.
- Cost Savings: Small-scale traders will save approximately Ksh750 per declaration.
- Efficiency: Allows for pre-arrival declarations and digital toll collection, smoothing the movement of goods and people.
The launch addresses long-standing complaints from truck drivers about costly delays and inefficient scanning procedures that have hampered trade between Kenya and Uganda. KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga stated the platform will “ease cross-border trade and promote a conducive business environment” through faster, more accessible, and transparent services.
