The government of Kenya, through the Kenya Film Classification Board has banned an Indian movie titled ‘Badhaai Do’ for promoting same sex marriage.
In a presser issued by the CEO, Chris Wambua, KFCB criticized the producers for infringing on Kenyan values and laws by promoting gay marriage.
“This is an obvious and intentional attempt to promote same-sex marriage agenda as an acceptable way of life with the characters explicitly seeking to normalize their feelings and convince their families to embrace and empathise with them” he added.
The film which hit the cinemas on February 11th has been largely banned in several countries in the middle east.
The plot centres around a gay cop (Rajkummar Rao) and a lesbian physical education teacher (Bhumi Pednekar) who enter into a lavender marriage, a wedding of convenience, to avoid family pressure, but it leads to further issues.
Hashvardhan Kulkarni, the director of ‘Badhaai Do,’ stated in an interview with PTI that the film is an attempt to normalize the conversation around the queer community and break certain preconceptions associated with their representation in film.
KFCB however maintains that Homosexuality is not within the country’s national values
“Homosexuality remains an anathema. According to Article 45 of the Constitution of Kenya, marriage is a union between persons of the opposite sex. Sections 162, 163 and 165 of the Penal Code criminalise homosexual behaviour”.
