Kenya Hosts 12 Nations For The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Ladies Tennis Tournament

    The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affair, Creative Economy and Sports Hon. Ababu Namwamba,EGH flanked by PS Eng. Peter Tum, this morning, flagged off the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup all-ladies tennis competition at the Nairobi Club.

    This year’s edition has received a substantial financial boost from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, with the ministry injecting Ksh 14.1 million towards its success.

    The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup has attracted 12 countries: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Namibia, Tunisia, Kenya, Mauritius, Burundi, Nigeria, Ghana, Botswana, and Uganda, to demontrarte Kenya’s pedigree as a leader and Sports powerhouse in Africa.

    The tournament features three pools, with Pool B comprising the host nation Kenya, alongside Mauritius, Tunisia, and Burundi, with Kenya’s team, under the guidance of coach Francis Rogoi, remaining unchanged from the previous year.

    The team includes the golden girl Angella Okutoyi, Alicia Owegi, Roselinda Asumwa, Cynthia Cheruto, and Stacy Yego.

    Last year’s edition saw Kenya clinch the third-place finish behind Morocco, who emerged victorious, defeating Tunisia 2-1 in a thrilling final.

    This year, the Kenyan team is determined to improve their performance and possibly clinch the top spot, bouyed by the support from the government and that of the home crowd.
