Five days after Azimio la Umoja withdrew from the talks for seven days citing irreconcilable differences, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance has moved to stop the talks from collapsing.
The ruling coalition is now proposing a slew of measures to ensure that talks can resume.
In a letter addressed to Azimio bipartisan talks chairperson Otiende Amollo by his co-chairperson George Murugara, Kenya Kwanza said it had agreed to meet Azimio la Umoja’s demand on the recruitment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners.
He explained that the two (Murugara and Amollo) should jointly write a letter to the IEBC Selection Panel, asking it to halt the recruitment process for about 21 – 30 days until an agreement is reached between the two camps.
On preserving the IEBC’s Presidential Election Server, which Azimio has demanded, Murugara stated that the electoral commission was by law required to preserve the technologies until August 15, 2025.
As such, Murugara was willing to co-author a letter to the IEBC reminding them of their legal obligation to preserve the Presidential Election Servers and the data contained therein to facilitate any requirement for an inspection.
He, therefore, invited Amollo for a meeting on Monday at 2 pm in order to discuss and write the required letters so that the talks can continue.
Azimio had issued an ultimatum to the government last week to declare their commitment to implementing the interim concerns, failing which the talks would be considered terminated and the opposition would meet to chart a way forward.
