Kenya registers 181 new cases amid lifting of containment measures

Kenya coronavirus cases have increased to 8,067 after 181 people contracted the virus in the last 24 hours – By Gerald Gekara.

In a statement to the media, it is said that the cases were sourced from 2,131 samples that were tested. So far, the number of samples tested rose to 191,394.

The new cases were reported in 4 counties Namely; Nairobi with (134) cases, Kiambu (19), Mombasa (9), Kajiado and Machakos (6), , Lamu (3), Murang’a (2), while Uasin Gishu and Kirinyaga (1) each registered one case.

In terms of nationalities, 179 of the new cases were Kenyans, with two of them being foreigners. The gender comprised of 123 males and 58 females aged between four months to 79 years old.

127 patients have since recovered from various hospitals, bringing to 2,414 the total number of recoveries.

However, the country’s coronavirus related fatalities have hit 164, after four more people succumbed to the virus.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in his earlier address announced a phased reopening of the economy, which will see the resumption of international travel, worship services and intercounty movement between places regarded as hotspots.

World over, more than 11.4 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the coronavirus and 533,781 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University. Nearly 6.2 million have recovered from the disease.

India entered the top 3 countries with the highest cases, after nearly 23,000 new cases were reported.
