Kenya Railways has phased out the usage of cash for ticket purchases at all Madaraka Express stops.
According to a notification, the only permissible payment methods in the future would be mobile wallets or credit cards.
“We wish to notify our customers and the general public that effective 1st February 2023, we will no longer be accepting cash for the purchase of tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service Stations,” reads the notice.
Cashless payments have been praised for reducing theft of public funds because they decrease human connection with money.
This new initiative is in keeping with Kenya Kwanza’s objective to digitize all government services.
