Kenya To Implement the 7th Cycle of Global Environment Facility to Enhance Environmental Wellbeing

The steering committee meeting of the Ministry for the implementation of the 7th cycle of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-7) was presided over by Eng Festus Ng’eno, the principal secretary for environment and climate change.

GEF-7 provides three main entry points for countries to address direct drivers of biodiversity loss: Prevention, Control and Management of Invasive Alien Species.

Improving Financial Sustainability, Effective Management, and Ecosystem Coverage of the Global Protected Area Estate.

PS Ng’eno declared that the Ministry would keep utilizing GEF and similar initiatives to protect, restore, and improve the environment for the benefit of present-day society and future generations.

“Ecosystem and landscape restoration efforts are critical for addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and habitat degradation,” Eng Ng’eno noted.

Kenya is carrying on a project funded by the GEF-7 called “Strengthening of Forest Management for Improved Biodiversity Conservation and Climate Resilience in the Southern Rangelands of Kenya,” which aims to provide a functional and resilient landscape for a sustainable economic production.
