A 26-year-old woman has been arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 600 grams of cocaine by ingesting drug-filled pellets.
According to Kenya’s Anti-Narcotics detectives, Wendy Mbeke Muli was intercepted on the morning of 13 June while preparing to board an outbound international flight. Officers said her “uneasy demeanour” during routine screening raised suspicions, prompting a further search.
Investigators soon discovered that the suspect had concealed pellets inside her body, leading to her placement under medical observation.
Later that day, Muli reportedly requested access to the washroom, where she excreted two pellets. A further six pellets were recovered the following day, bringing the total to eight. Tests confirmed the pellets contained approximately 626.65 grams of cocaine.
She remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court on 16 June, where she will face charges related to drug trafficking.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) described the case as “yet another desperate attempt” by traffickers to evade law enforcement at one of Africa’s busiest airports.
Authorities have stepped up security and screening measures at JKIA in recent years amid increased efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking through Kenya’s transport hubs.
The Anti-Narcotics Unit has urged travellers to remain vigilant and warned that anyone found trafficking narcotics will face the full force of the law.
Investigations into the suspect’s travel history and possible accomplices are ongoing.
