President William Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet, has directly accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of orchestrating the recent violent protests in Nairobi over the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang.
Speaking during a fundraiser in Uasin Gishu County, Kibet alleged that Gachagua is using unrest to push a tribal political agenda, claiming:
“The tribalist has announced a roadmap. The other day, he started with burning cars in Nairobi… Will they burn Kenya while we watch?”
The Thursday protests, which began peacefully to demand justice for Ojwang who died in police custody, turned chaotic by evening.
Police responded with tear gas and water cannons, and two vehicles were set ablaze, while property was destroyed in parts of the city.
In response, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja vowed to bring perpetrators to book.
“Those who destroyed public property will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said, stressing that while the Constitution protects peaceful protests, violence will not be tolerated.
The protests have heightened political tension, especially as OCS Samson Talaam and officer James Mukhwana remain in custody over Ojwang’s controversial death.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) continues its investigations and has already filed a court application to obtain call data from Safaricom to aid the probe.
Kibet’s remarks mark a growing rift within the political establishment, as the fallout from Ojwang’s death increasingly becomes both a legal and political flashpoint.
