As the curtains drew to mark the end of a heated campaign season at the coastal constituency of Kwale County, the Msambweni race descended to an ugly spat between former ODM firewoman Aisha Jumwa and Edwin Sifuna. – By Gerald Gekara.
The brawl started when Malindi legislator Hon. Aisha Jumwa claimed that the ODM party members were hatching plans to rape her. She however dared those planning to do so as she is not afraid of anyone.
In response to her allegations, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna distanced the party from her claims. He added that the party was not interested in her and would think nothing of the sort against the female MP. https://telegra.ph/embed/youtube?url=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2FJgCKkr04OHU
However, the sentiments did not auger well with members of the public, as many could not understand how the leaders were toying around with rape “as if it were nothing.”
Kenyans cautioned the leaders against making such sentiments, saying encouragement of such talk could lead to widespread normalization of the atrocity against the opposite gender.
Dominic Omondi — “Sifuna is just stupid & a kid in Politics, you cannot compare Sifuna to Aisha Jumwa because Aisha is an elected Mp while Sifuna is nothing, just a noise maker. In regards to what he said about rape I pitty him, because women never forget they will remember this to the ballot.”
Bravin Yuri — “This statement doesn’t sit right in my head. This is normalizing rape Culture. The Secretary General should withdraw this statement and attach an apology to it.”
Wangeci — “So Sad when a whole ODM SG Edwin sifuna thinks rape allegations are funny!! whether it’s against a beautiful or an ‘ugly’ girl there’s no justifiable rape. Choose your leaders wisely”
Virani Kenya — “Sifuna didn’t say anything in the direction of encouraging rape. Fact that he was demeaning a woman based on her looks is still not a good look. On flip side Aisha Jumwa words about not being a virgin and needing a huge item to handle her was equally appaling. KENYAN POLITICS!”
