Police have launched a manhunt after three murder suspects staged a daring escape from prison facilities in a second attempt.
The inmates who escaped at 4 a.m. on Monday, October 10, had been convicted of murder and violence and were scheduled to appear in Kerugoya High Court on Tuesday for sentencing.
However, one inmate was re-arrested, while the other two escaped. The inmates were charged with the murder of a Kirinyaga University student earlier this year.
The prison break prompted Kenya Prisons Commissioner General Brigadier Rtd John Warioba to visit the Kerugoya police station to investigate the two inmates’ escape.
Several prison break incidents have been reported this year as part of efforts to close gaps in correctional facilities.
Three fugitives escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison, causing widespread panic, but were apprehended in Kitui on their way to Somalia.
Following their escape on November 14, President Uhuru Kenyatta convened a crisis meeting with all high-security officials at State House.
The President also directed the State Department of Correctional Services to take disciplinary action against all Kenya Prisons Service personnel who were on duty at the time of the security breach.
Following the escape, heavily armed detectives raided Magereza House and whisked away the prison boss before accompanying him home.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta fired Commissioner-General of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo and appointed Brigadier (Rtd) John Warioba to succeed him.
Uhuru also directed that all personnel who were on duty when the security breach occurred face disciplinary action.
The failure of wardens to monitor inmate movement has been blamed for inmate escapes.
