KFCB to crackdown on Matatus airing ‘immoral’ TV content

Kenya Film Classification Board has launched an operation to apprehend Public Service Vehicles found airing unlicensed film content.

Through its director, Ezekiel Mutua, the board lamented on the continued widespread consumption of unlicensed and morally unjust content being shown on the television screens.

In a statement, the stern moral police have lamented that the screens provide an avenue to air immoral and ‘pornographic’ content.

“Some Matatus have become cinema theatres for offensive content and are destroying the youths, especially students. Some students leave home and roam around in these vehicles the whole day.”

Dr. Ezekiel Mutua quoted complaints by many Kenyans, adding that the transport sector had gone rogue.

“The stories of agony told by passengers in PSVs are very disturbing. The display, exhibition or playing of pornographic content, loud music and foul language used on passengers presents an image of a public transport sector gone rogue. “

Kenya’s matatus are known worldwide as unique art, with music and videos being a large part of what makes them stand out.

This created a niche for budding Kenyan artists who rely on the matatus for marketing.

The business has also seen a growth in the audio and video fitting industry that had employed several young people.

But with the rise, bad elements have crept in such matatu owners not securing licenses and getting away with procedures by uninstalling what they cannot pay for, prior to inspection.

Some of the Kenyans, more so those advanced in age, consider them a nuisance.
