How Police Ignorance Almost Bungled A Heroin Case

A preliminary test on the drug gave a negative result for heroin, but a subsequent test performed in the absence of the two yielded a positive result.

An embarrassing police blunder nearly bungled a heroin trafficking case in Kikambala, Kilifi County.

When samples of heroin worth Sh2.5 million were sent to Nairobi for testing, the police failed to include Mr. Swaleh Yussuf and his wife Fatuma Asma Ahmed.

A preliminary test on the drug gave a negative result for heroin.

However, a subsequent test performed in the absence of the two yielded a positive result.

“What assurance do the accused have that whatever drug that tested negative during the preliminary test in their presence is the identical one that was exposed to the additional test in Nairobi? Justice Florence Macharia, a High Court Judge, inquired.

Justice Macharia went on to say that there was no dispute that there was a substance that, after confirmation tests in Nairobi, proved to be heroin.
