Kilifi Family Demands Justice Over Son’s Death In Police Custody

A family in Kilifi is demanding an answer for the death of their kin, Isaack Lewa, while in police detention at Chasimba Police Station.

His wife, Pauline Okeyo, stated that the posture and shape in which she discovered her husband did not match the supposed suicide story propagated by the police.

“When he unlocked the cell door, I found him lying on his side on the floor with a boxer around his neck. When I flipped him over, his hands were bound, and foam was coming out of his mouth. I tried to resuscitate him, but he remained unresponsive. I want my husband to get justice “Okeyo said.

In addition, the deceased had some back injuries. Attempts to get him rushed to the hospital for treatment were unsuccessful.

When she sought to meet him upon arrival, Okeyo described the demeanor of the police officers stationed there as suspicious.

When she reached the reporting desk, she said that two policemen refused her access to Lewa and purposefully delayed her.

“They began telling me about my spouse being a wanted fugitive. For almost an hour, I cycled between the two, neither of whom admitted to having the key to the cell.

“Finally, one of them smiled cynically before escorting me to where Lewa was imprisoned,” said the anguished woman.

Lewa committed suicide, according to a police report filed under OB Number 10/2/1/2023.

“When the cell was opened, the deceased body was found lying close to the cell door with his boxer tied to the neck. They tried untying the boxer from the neck but realized his body was motionless,” the report indicated.
