Kilifi: Politicians Lock Horns Over Tribe Endorsement

Kilifi Gubernatorial hopeful Eng Dzombo Mbaru has distanced himself from a Chonyi sub tribe meeting that endorsed Emanuel Nzai as the gubernatorial candidate.

Speaking in an interview from Magarini, Eng Mbaru said he was more focused on hunting for Kilifi votes and that his ambition is to serve the entire population including his Chonyi community.

“As I speak to you, I am in Malindi constituency heading to Magarini, looking for votes. I am seeking the endorsement of the entire Kilifi electorate including my Chonyi community. I respect the idea of the Chonyi elders but I have a large mandate focused on the Kilifi people,” said Eng Mbaru.

Last weekend a group of Chonyi elders and professionals held a meeting with the gubernatorial hopefuls from the community and voted Mr Nzai, Jumuiya Ya Kaunti Za Pwani(JKP) Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, to head the community in vote hunting for the top county seat.

The meeting at the Chonyi Amphitheater in Mwarakaya ward was meant to seek a unification of the community in endorsing a single aspirant who will have the support of the community.

“I am happy that the Chonyis have settled on me to carry their gubernatorial hopes. That has given me the opportunity to now go to the people of Kilifi and seek their votes and becoming their second Governor after the exit of Amason Kingi next year,” said Mr Nzai in an interview.
“I would like to thank all those who participated in this noble initiative and it is my hope that we shall continue to conduct peaceful campaigns as the electioneering year nears,” he added.

Currently those who have declared to replace Governor Kingi include his Deputy Gideon Saburi, ASAL CAS Gideon Mung’aro, Agriculture consultant Baha Nguma, Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Assembly speaker Jimmy Kahindi, Magarini MP Michael Kingi, and Kenyan Ambassador to Tanzania Dan Kazungu.
