Police in Kirinyaga County have arrested a Kagio businessman for allegedly stealing Ksh 3800 from his customer.
According to Joseph Murathi, his father Jeffitha Igeria went to buy rice worth Ksh 200, and because he had Ksh 4000 in his phone that he had sent for new year celebrations, he told the trader to withdraw the Ksh 200 and gave him his pin number.
However, the trader withdrew the Ksh 200 and then withdrew Ksh 3800 at the same time.
“My father discovered he had zero balance in the account after he asked his grandson to check the balance,” Murathi said.
Mzee Igeria, shocked, returned to the Mpesa shop to inquire about what had occurred, and that is when the trader began harassing him.
The matter was later reported to the Kagio police station and police officers immediately arrested the trader.
Enraged boda boda riders at the Kang’aru boda boda stage attempted to lynch the trader but he was whisked by the police.
“We suspect he is among Kagio traders who are linked to cases of Mpesa fraud and we will not allow him to operate at Kang’aru shopping centre,” John Njomo, a Kang’aru resident said.
Shocked Igeria was given his money back after the suspect confessed.
“I had no idea the young man could rob me, despite being like his father,” Igeria explained.
The suspect, who runs an Mpesa shop in Kang’aru on the Sagana-Kagio road, is being held at the Kagio police station awaiting charges.
