At least three people are feared to be dead and several injured after a truck transporting gumboots fell from the Kondele Bypass Highway flyover in Kisumu.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control of the truck as he tried to turn on a sharp corner which caused the cargo trailer to roll over.
Nyanza Regional traffic commander Joseph Nganga confirmed 3 casualties were pronounced dead on the spot as the load of the trailer collapsed on a tuk-tuk that was parked on the roadside.
Among the casualties were the truck driver, the tuk-tuk operator and a woman who was seated on the passenger side of the tuk-tuk.
Locals decried poor road design, claiming that many truck drivers had difficulty manoeuvring the difficult turn while carrying heavy loads.
“We urge the Kisumu County government to look into the issue and install road signs to caution the drivers of impending danger or divert the cargo trailer onto another road. Accidents are becoming a norm in the area and we fear for our lives,” one resident said.
The residents also want the pavement to be built higher to prevent drivers from overturning in case they lose control.
This is the fifth accident to occur in the same spot and in the same manner within a span of two years.
