Cholera has claimed two more lives, bringing to three the number of reported deaths since the disease outbreak in Kitui County early this week.
Another 14 cholera patients are admitted in different health facilities across the county and are said to be responding well to treatment.
Health officials in the county are working round the clock to contain the spread of the killer disease.
Officer in-charge of Public Health at the Kitui level 4 Hospital Dr. Daniel Mutinda, while speaking to KNA Thursday at the hospital grounds confirmed that many patients have been visiting the facility with cholera related symptoms, with most being treated as outpatients and released to go home.
Dr. Mutinda noted that victims are suspected to have contracted the disease after consuming food served at parties they attended.
“Many of the casualties are from different places, some from outside Kitui County and had attended parties alongside their families,” said Dr. Mutinda.
He urged residents to take necessary measures and keep high standards of hygiene to prevent the spread.
Among the hygiene measures Mutinda stressed on include boiling drinking water, consuming well cooked food, washing fruits well before consuming and also washing hands.
Following the outbreak, public food eating joints in Kitui town and other places across the county that do not meet the required standards of health hygiene have been closed down.
The public health office has also banned hawking of food in its intensified efforts to fight further spread of the deadly disease.
