The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has today received a consignment of essential drugs and medical supplies worth KSh 80 million, supplied by the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).
The delivery is part of a larger KSh 125 million drug order placed by the county government. The balance will be delivered in due course by the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS).
Health and Sanitation CECM Ruth Koki noted that the consignment marks the first batch of deliveries for the first quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year.
“This delivery comes at a crucial time and will help bridge supply gaps in our health facilities. Distribution will begin immediately, and all 311 facilities across the county are expected to receive their share within the next two weeks,” said Koki.

She further clarified that, in line with National Pharmaceutical Guidelines, certain medications such as those used to manage diabetes and hypertension can only be issued at health centres and Level IV facilities, and not at dispensaries.
CECM Koki also urged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to ensure continued access to affordable healthcare services under the national health insurance scheme.
Chief Officer for Drugs and Medical Supplies, Aggrey Kamba, assured the public that the Ministry has put in place strict monitoring mechanisms to ensure the drugs are distributed efficiently, used appropriately, and reach the patients who need them most.
He emphasized that no misconduct in the drug supply chain will be tolerated, and any cases of mismanagement or diversion will be dealt with firmly.
The KEMSA supplied consignment includes essential medicines such as antibiotics, pain relievers, snake anti-venom, and drugs for managing chronic illnesses.
This delivery marks a major milestone in Kitui County’s ongoing efforts to ensure continuous access to quality healthcare.
It reflects the strong commitment of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, under the leadership of H.E. Governor Julius Malombe, to strengthen health systems and improve the wellbeing of all Kitui residents.
