KPA Completes Berth 22 Project

Written By Gerald Gekara 📝

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced the completion of Berth 22 at the Port of Mombasa.

The new berth is 300 meters wide and brings an additional 450,000 TEUs annual capacity.

The expansion is part of a Sh20 billion plan to increase Mombasa’s port capacity to accept cargo and non-containerized commodities.

In January, the Kenya Ports Authority spent Sh5.2 billion on new cranes and a tugboat to increase efficiency at the Mombasa port.

The three cranes cost Sh3.3 billion each to buy from Japan.

The Mombasa port now has 16 ship-to-shore gantry cranes serving seven berths, thanks to the addition of the three new cranes.

The Mombasa port received a Sh1.9 billion tug boat on Monday, bringing the total number of high-performance vessels at the port to six.

The investment is being driven by rising demand for imported cargo in the region, where most countries are growing at least 5% annually.

Exports account for only 15% of the cargo that passes through Mombasa each year, with neighboring countries accounting for a third of the total, while Kenya, the region’s largest economy, takes the lion’s share.

Annual cargo volume via the port is expected to increase to 47 million tonnes in 2025 from 32 million tonnes last year.

The completed phase two of the 2nd Container Terminal at Port of Mombasa with an additional annual capacity of 450,000 TEUs has officially been handed over to KPA

The Port now has a cumulative capacity of 2.1 mil and remains among the top five ports in Africa.
