Unpaid electricity bills of Sh15 billion have been written off by Kenya Power, the majority of which had been outstanding for more than three months.

According to the firm’s annual report, this resulted in the utility company impairing Sh15 billion of the Sh29.6 billion in outstanding electricity bills as of June 2021.

Kenya Power said it is only optimistic about recovering half of its outstanding power bills, which could be up to three months old.

However, it has given up hope of recovering Sh14.5 billion in unpaid bills that have been outstanding for more than three months.

Since Kenya Power distributes power before collecting, the firm has been losing billions of shillings in uncollected earnings.

Households or domestic power users are the most common defaulters.

60% of outstanding bills among residential customers, 20% among SMEs, and 10% among commercial customers.
