Lawyer Weeps, Asks Court To Gag Journalists

A lawyer facing charges of stealing by servant sobbed in front of a Mombasa court, describing how the charges had tainted his name and destroyed his career.

Philip Onyango told Mombasa senior principal magistrate Vincent Adet that he was unaware of the charges against him and that journalists in the courtroom should be barred from covering the case.

He told the court that the charges he was facing had barred him from practicing law and that he was angry that the charges had been used to bring him down.

Amid sobs, he took issue with a photographer and petitioned the court, claiming that continued coverage of the matter would further damage his reputation.

“I’m making an application to have journalists in the courtroom, to be ordered not to publish what happened in court today, and especially to have the photojournalist who’s taking my photos issue orders not to have them published,” he said.

Magistrate Adet quickly dismissed the application, stating that he lacked the authority to order journalists not to cover court proceedings.
