Locals Protest Mama Ngina College Expansion

In ten days, the Property and Environment Court will deliver a ruling on a petition submitted by 160 persons who oppose the purchase of their ancestral land for Mama Ngina University.

Kenyatta University and Mama Ngina University, who are mentioned as respondents in the petition, are opposed to the residents of Gatundu South, Kiambu County, having their petition heard.

The respondents claimed that the Thika court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case.

The petitioners, on the other hand, allege in court that the process of reclaiming their land is dubious because the respondents, which include the National Land Commission (NLC), have yet to make any formal disclosures about compensation.

“Due to land shortages, the petitioners’ parents and relatives are buried on these properties, and it would be unethical and dehumanizing for the residents to exhume the bodies,” the families argue, adding that some in their midst are elderly and that there are more than 100 graves on the targeted land.
