M-PESA Foundation Unveils KES 35 Million School Project at Limbine Primary School in Meru County

The M-PESA Foundation has announced a major investment of KES 35 million to develop and upgrade learning infrastructure at Limbine Primary School in Meru County, a move set to enhance access to quality education for over 520 learners.

As part of the project, the Foundation will construct six new classrooms for Grades 1 to 6, renovate four existing classrooms, build a fully equipped science laboratory, and put up modern ablution blocks for both staff and students. Additionally, the school will benefit from the renovation of its existing administration block and the construction of a new kitchen to improve school nutrition services.

Speaking during the project launch, Joseph Ogutu, Chairman of the Safaricom Foundation, emphasized the transformative power of education, noting that the Foundation remains committed to supporting education as a cornerstone for national development.

“Education is a great equaliser, opening doors and improving people’s lives regardless of their background or circumstances. Unfortunately, despite the great progress that education has brought to our society, the sector still grapples with ongoing challenges, one of them being the lack of adequate infrastructure, which limits access to quality education. That is why M-PESA Foundation has invested in education in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, County Governments, and local communities under the Citizens of the Future Programme,” said Ogutu.

This latest initiative forms part of the Foundation’s broader commitment to improving educational outcomes across Kenya. Since its inception, Safaricom, through its philanthropic arms—the M-PESA and Safaricom Foundations, has invested KES 126 million in education projects across Meru County alone.

The most recent prior intervention was at Lubunu Primary School, where construction of new school facilities is currently underway, further demonstrating the Foundation’s dedication to long-term educational impact in the region.

The Citizens of the Future Programme, under which this project falls, focuses on equipping learners with quality education, proper facilities, and a conducive environment to help nurture their potential and prepare them for a competitive future.

Construction at Limbine Primary School is expected to begin immediately, with the new facilities slated for completion in the coming months. Local leaders, parents, and education stakeholders have welcomed the investment, calling it a timely boost to the community and a beacon of hope for the younger generation.
