Muvuti sub-location assistant chief Elizabeth Mwangangi has warned locals against killing suspected thieves, saying that they risk long jail terms.

Her call came after residents of Uamani trading centre lynched a man suspected to be a thief on Monday night after he was caught stealing in a shop before the time police officers arrived at the scene.

Ms Elizabeth said killing the suspect is unacceptable and urge the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.

“If you take laws into your hands and kill the suspect, how will they be reported to the police? You should allow the police officers to take the suspect and laws to o follow”

“I am warning locals against taking the law into their hands because anyone who will break it will be arrested and prosecuted and appealed to them to volunteer information to relevant authorities when they feel aggrieved,” she said yesterday.

The assistant chief also warned those behind the crime in the region that their days were numbered and that the long arm of the laws will soon catch them.
