President John Pombe Magufuli is dead. The Tanzania President succumbed to heart attack at 6pm on Wednesday 17th March 2021.
Magufuli, a close ally of Raila Odinga is suspected to have succumbed to Covid 19. He refused to adhere to the Covid 19 regulations…and urged Tanzanians to ignore the pandemic and continue with their lives.
The Tanzania government has said the President had a pre-existing heart condition that he was undergoing treatment for.
He was elected President of the Republic of Tanzania in 2015. Magufuli is the 5th President of Tanzania.
He is will be remembered in the EAC region as the leader who trashed the Covid 19 stringent containment rules. During the 2017 Kenya presidential election, Magufuli fully backed Raila Odinga.
He is considered a maverick politician who has shown little respect to his neighbors. President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Magufuli in his home in 2019 to repair relations between Kenya and Tanzania. Magufuli is the first Tanzania President to die in office.
