The Makueni County Government has confirmed 216 contract healthcare workers to permanent and pensionable terms, ending years of job uncertainty for vital frontline staff.

The confirmation letters were officially issued by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. during a ceremony held at the Mother and Child Hospital, in the presence of Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, Speaker Douglas Mbilu, and Members of the County Assembly.

Among those confirmed are 50 nurses, 24 registered clinical officers, 18 medical lab technologists, 12 pharmaceutical technologists, 11 psychological counsellors, and 4 emergency medical technicians, along with other essential health professionals.

“This is a commitment to the people of Makueni,” Governor Kilonzo said. “By securing the welfare of our health workers, we are strengthening the foundation of our entire healthcare system.”

The governor also highlighted wider reforms, including the promotion of 917 health staff across various cadres who had stagnated in the same job groups for years.

Fifty-six doctors, including six consultants, were elevated to Job Group R, while three senior consultants moved to Job Group S.

In a major leap for specialized care, the county recently hired its first neurosurgeon, now stationed at the Makueni County Referral Hospital.

Kilonzo acknowledged the struggles faced by long-serving contract workers, such as a lack of job security, limited access to training, and challenges securing credit facilities despite performing at par with permanent staff.
