Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital children trafficking case takes a new twist as the two suspects accused of stealing and selling newborns from the hospital claim that their prosecution was initiated by the BBC.
Makallah Fred Leparan and Selina Awuor Adundo both staff at the hospital have informed Milimani Chief Magistrate that the case facing them did not have any complainant and that only BBC alleged there was child trafficking at the health facility.
“It is not an unknown fact that BBC is a commercial media house which gets and relies on viewers to watch their channels to get views. The subject of this trial heavily relies on a video by BBC channel. As it is seen clearly, from the beginning of the video to the very end of the video, it is the journalist that is narrating and implicating the accused persons. Every accusation that implicates the accused persons is only there as circumstantial evidence.”
The suspects further informed the court that at no given point in the video shows the suspects explicitly involved in child trafficking.
They also told the court that it was by a narration of the eloquent BBC Journalist who implicated them more than once as he narrated the story for the benefit of his viewers.
According to the suspects, for the BBC to justify their story to seem more believable, the Journalist called one of the witnesses, Nairobi Metropolitan Service deputy director to lay down accusations against them hence convicting them before they were even charged.
The two suspects, Makallah Fred Leparan and Selina Awuor Adundo are charged with stealing three infants from Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital on diverse dates between March and November 2020.
The three infants were aged: 8 days, 2 weeks and 2 months respectively.
The case proceeds in Court.
