A man accused of publishing inflammatory social media content that triggered widespread public outrage has been arrested in Mombasa County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrest of David Onyango Elgon, popularly known online as MC Adek Tatu, was arrested over posts shared on his Facebook account that authorities said were insensitive and capable of disrupting public order.

The content quickly went viral across multiple social media platforms, attracting widespread attention and concern among members of the public.

Detectives launched investigations and tracked the suspect to his residence at Queen’s Court in Utange, Mombasa County, where he was arrested following what the agency described as a swift intelligence-led operation.

“Acting swiftly on actionable intelligence, a team of detectives launched a manhunt, trailing the suspect to his hideout at Queen’s Court in Utange, Mombasa County, where he was arrested in his residential house,” the DCI said.

The suspect is currently being held in police custody as detectives finalize processing procedures ahead of his arraignment in court.

While confirming the arrest, the DCI cautioned Kenyans against the misuse of social media platforms, emphasizing that freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.

The agency warned that individuals who publish or distribute content deemed inflammatory or likely to incite public unrest risk facing legal consequences.

“The digital space is not a lawless jungle. While we enjoy the freedom of expression, publishing or distributing inflammatory posts that incite public outcry and divide us as a nation is a crime,” the DCI stated.
