A man identified as Mugambi has been sentenced to three months in prison or a fine of Sh10,000 after pleading guilty to stealing coffee berries from a farm in Kiambu County.

The incident occurred on July 2, 2025, at a farm located in Murera Ward. According to the prosecution, police officers on routine foot patrol within the area caught Mugambi in the act of plucking ripe coffee berries.

The stolen berries, which weighed 12 kilograms, were valued at approximately Sh3,600. The produce belonged to a farmer identified as Vincent.

Upon being confronted by the officers, Mugambi attempted to flee the scene but was quickly pursued and apprehended. He was taken to the local police station and later arraigned in court, where he admitted to the offense.

During his plea for leniency, Mugambi told the court that he had planned to sell the stolen coffee through a broker. He expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he was driven by the need to earn a living. He asked the court for forgiveness, citing financial hardship.

In delivering the judgment, the magistrate acknowledged the economic challenges many Kenyans face but stressed the importance of respecting private property and the law. Mugambi was sentenced to serve three months in prison or pay a fine of Sh10,000.

The court also directed that the recovered coffee berries be returned to their rightful owner, Vincent.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about petty theft in rural agricultural areas.
