Man Utd Suffer Shock Loss To Leeds

Manchester United suffered their second defeat under Michael Carrick after losing 2-1 to old rivals Leeds United on Monday night.

Interim manager Michael Carrick made four changes from United’s draw against Bournemouth three weeks ago as Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Sesko were recalled while Kobbie Mainoo missed out through injury.

Leeds got off to the perfect start after opening the scoring on four minutes when Noah Okafor volleyed home from around eight yards out after the United defence failed to clear Jayden Bogle’s cross.

While the hosts struggled to carve out big chances, the visitors doubled their lead in the 29th minute when Okafor completed his brace with a strike from the edge of the box that took a big deflection off Lenny Yoro and sailed into the far corner.

Leeds almost added a third goal before the break when some more sloppy play led to Ao Tanaka rounding goalkeeper Senne Lammens in the box, but he was denied by a goal-saving tackle by Martinez.

It got worse for the Red Devils ten minutes after the break when they were reduced to ten men after Martinez was shown a straight red card for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair following an intervention from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The hosts did give themselves a lifeline on 68 minutes when Bruno Fernandes turned provider to pick out Casemiro, who sent a powerful header into the far corner for his eighth league goal of the campaign.

Carrick’s charges threw everything forward in search of an equaliser but Leeds defended with every player behind the ball to hold on for their first win at Old Trafford in the Premier League era, which included Calvert-Lewin making a goal-line clearance.

The Red Devils remain third on the log ahead of the weekend’s clash against Chelsea, while Leeds move six points clear of the relegation zone.
