Martha Karua, Azimio’s running mate, accused Standard Digital of misreporting.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 5, Karua chastised the media for implying that she had conceded defeat following the Supreme Court’s decision to appoint William Ruto as President-elect.
“Shame on you for false reporting! Respecting a court ruling is not the same as conceding. I state clearly that I disagree with the court’s findings,” infuriated Karua stated.
The Standard Digital, a subsidiary of the giant Standard Media Group, had posted a social media engagement photo of Karua with captions indicating that she had conceded.
“Raila Odinga’s running mate in the August 9, 2022 presidential election, Martha Karua, has conceded losing to William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua,” the post read.
Earlier in the day, the outspoken politician expressed her displeasure with the Supreme Court’s decision on the presidential election petition.
Karua and Raila Odinga had challenged Ruto’s victory after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announced it on August 15.
The seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice Martha Koome, however, unanimously dismissed the seven petitions that were consolidated into one, calling it “hot air.”
Karua had previously criticized the ruling but stated that she would respect the court’s decision.
“The court has spoken. I respect but disagree with the findings,” Karua stated.
