Dozens of motor vehicle parts, dismantled into pieces from vehicles whose owners could not be identified immediately, were recovered this morning from a scrap metal dealer’s yard in Nairobi.
Following the raid at a scrap metal yard near Kariobangi Light Industries, one man, Moses Ndegwa, was apprehended and a lorry full of vehicle-turned pieces was recovered.
Early this morning, detectives received information via the DCI #Fichua hotline that three vehicles, a Toyota DX 102, a Toyota 110, and a Pajero, had been driven into the scrap metal yard before being hurriedly dismantled by a pool of mechanics on standby.
Under the cover of darkness, the vehicles were deconstructed into pieces by highly skilled craftsmen and were already loaded into a lorry ready for the lucrative scrap metal market by 4am.
The skilled mechanics left little trace of their trade, and it would take a genius to deduce that vehicles were chopped into pieces the night before at the yard, which also serves as a welding workshop during the day.
Fortunately, detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau responded to the call just in time, as the lorry carrying the load was roaring to leave for an unknown destination along Mombasa Road.
Instead, the lorry was diverted to the Buru Buru police station, where the load was unloaded while the suspect was questioned in detail about his trade and his accomplices.
As investigations into this high-level crime continue, more arrests will be made.
DCI thanks the concerned member of the public who reported the crime by dialing the #FichuakwaDCI Hotline number 0800 722 203.
