Maseno University Students On Strike Over Killing Of Colleague During Azimio Demos

Maseno University students took to the streets on Tuesday morning to protest the death of a fellow student who was allegedly shot and killed by police during the Azimio protests.

In videos shared online, the students took to the streets chanting solidarity slogans but were shortly dispersed by police officers who controlled the situation.

William Mayange, a third-year student, was shot in the neck after protesters stormed the Maseno police line.

Mayange was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Coptic hospital where he had been rushed.

Police say the students overpowered security officers, who had run out of teargas canisters and were forced to fire live bullets to disperse the crowds when Mayange was hit by a stray bullet.

Following the protest, another student, 22, is being treated for a gunshot wound at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).

According to hospital administrator Alex Ochieng, the student was referred to the facility after allegedly being shot in the elbow by police.

According to Ochieng, the patient will undergo surgery to determine whether the bullet was lodged in his body.
