Two masked men armed with crude weapons broke into a family home in Athi River, Machakos County, on Saturday night, tied up the male occupant, and subjected his wife, underage daughter, and domestic worker to sexual assault before fleeing with cash, electronics, and the family car.
The ordeal began shortly after 9pm when the intruders forced their way into the house as the family watched television.
According to Athi River Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer Michael Boiyo, the attackers herded everyone into one room, bound the man with ropes, and proceeded to rape the three females in his presence.
Before leaving, the criminals forced the wife to transfer Sh50,000 and Sh30,000 to separate mobile money accounts. They also took four mobile phones, a tablet, two laptops, and the family’s Volkswagen Golf.
The victims were later taken to hospital, treated for injuries sustained during the attack, and discharged in stable condition. The father reported the matter to Mavoko police station several hours later, triggering an immediate investigation.
Speaking on Monday, Boiyo described the incident as isolated but deeply disturbing. “We are treating this as robbery with violence, multiple counts of rape, and defilement of a minor, and motor vehicle theft,” he said.
“Every available resource is being deployed to trace the suspects.” No arrests had been made by Monday evening.
Residents expressed shock, saying no similar attack had occurred in the neighbourhood before. “It is unthinkable that a father was forced to watch his wife, daughter, and househelp being violated,” one neighbour said. “The cruelty goes beyond robbery. We are all shaken.”
Police have appealed for information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
