Mason Greenwood will remain in custody on Sunday evening before appearing before Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
On Saturday, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
All three counts are about the same person. The Manchester United striker is also under investigation for allegedly violating his release restrictions by contacting the alleged victim.
Greenwood was charged by Greater Manchester Police after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorized the case to proceed.
Greenwood will be remanded in custody until his first hearing, GMP confirmed to Mirror Football on Sunday morning.
The 21-year-old has not played for Manchester United since January, when he was bailed after being arrested on suspicion of rape, violence, and making threats to kill.
Manchester United issued the following statement on Saturday: “Manchester United acknowledges that criminal charges have been lodged against Mason Greenwood by the Crown Prosecution Service.” The club has suspended him awaiting the outcome of the legal proceedings.”
On Saturday, Janet Potter, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West, confirmed the decision to charge Greenwood, saying, “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.”
