Public transport users will now pay more for bus and matatu services after operators announced fare increases in response to a sharp rise in fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), with the new charges taking effect immediately on some routes.
Commuters across the country are expected to pay more for transport after Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators announced a fare increase of 50 per cent.
The announcement follows hours after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) increased petrol prices by Ksh16.65 per litre and diesel prices by Ksh46.29 per litre, while kerosene prices remained unchanged.

While addressing the press on Friday, May 15, representatives from the transport sector stated that the rising cost of fuel has significantly affected their daily earnings and operational expenses, forcing them to hike fare prices.
According to the operators, all matatus across various routes in Nairobi and other parts of the country are expected to implement the new charges immediately.
The operators also announced a strike of all PSVs starting Monday, May 18, lamenting that the new hiked fuel prices will make it difficult for the transport industry to sustain normal operations.
The strike is expected to affect commuters across major towns and cities, with operators calling on motorists and transport stakeholders to support their push against rising fuel costs.
