Marigat Community Sensitized On Battling Poisonous ‘Mathenge’

Members of the Marigat community in Baringo County have been sensitized to the National Strategy and Action Plan for Effective Management and Control of Prosopis juliflilora invasion in Kenya.

Speaking to members of the public at Ng’ambo area, the Deputy Chief Conservator of Forests for Drylands and Private Forests Development and Coordination Dr. Clement Ng’oriareng’ said that the government had formulated a strategy that will help the community which has been affected by the negative impacts of the plant to effectively control and manage it for enhanced ecological functioning of landscapes and improved livelihoods.

Dr. Ng’oriareng noted that the strategy had taken into account the views of all stakeholders including scientists and the local community.

The community elders noted that the plant had caused great havoc by invading grazing lands and farmlands thus causing them to loose their livelihoods.

They welcomed the strategy saying that it will help them control the rampant plant while benefiting from its management through production of various products.
