The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has issued a stern warning to entertainment venues and political leaders following former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s controversial call to boycott Mt Kenya musicians who recently visited Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.
The musicians, including renowned artists such as Samidoh Muchoki, Ben Githae, DJ Fatxo, and Jose Gatutura, held a meeting with Deputy President William Ruto at Kindiki’s residence last Friday. According to the DP, the gathering aimed to address the plight of musicians and curb exploitation by industry cartels.
However, the visit sparked outrage from Gachagua, who accused the artists of betrayal and urged the public to stop supporting them.
“Those who went to Ruto to ask for forgiveness, if not, I’ll order no one to listen to their music and no clubs will invite them to perform,” Gachagua declared.
In response, MCSK Chief Executive Officer Ezekiel Mutua condemned Gachagua’s remarks, terming them a threat to artists’ constitutional rights.
“We are deeply concerned by the unfortunate calls from senior political leaders urging a boycott of our members’ work,” Mutua stated. “These musicians were simply exercising their freedom of association to discuss industry issues.”
Mutua cautioned entertainment joints against complying with the boycott, warning of strict consequences.
“Any venue that heeds such discriminatory calls will not be authorized to play music licensed by MCSK,” he said. “We will not tolerate economic sabotage against our members.”
He emphasized that many musicians rely on public performances for their livelihood, and political intimidation could cripple their careers and the creative economy.
The boycott threat has already seen a section of fans unfollow the artists on social media and pledge to boycott their shows.
Meanwhile, CS Kindiki hit back at Gachagua, accusing him of authoritarianism. “You cannot dictate to citizens like that,” Kindiki said. “If you come within shooting range, we will deal with you.”
As the political storm rages, MCSK says it will closely monitor the situation to ensure no artist is discriminated against based on political affiliations.
