Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay is reportedly on the verge of joining Brazilian club Corinthians, marking an unexpected chapter in his career.
The Dutch winger, who gained prominence during his early years at PSV Eindhoven, initially made headlines when he transferred to Manchester United in 2015 under manager Louis van Gaal.
Depay’s time at United started with promise, as he scored two goals and provided an assist in a stunning debut performance against Club Brugge in a Champions League qualifier.
However, his time at Old Trafford quickly soured, and he struggled to replicate his early form. After just two seasons, he was sold to Olympique Lyon in January 2017.
In France, Depay revitalized his career with a series of impressive performances that caught the eye of top European clubs.
He subsequently signed with Barcelona before moving to Atletico Madrid last summer, where he experienced a tumultuous single season.
With tenacity and skill, the 30-year-old sought to make his mark in La Liga, yet he found himself returning to the market after a disappointing spell.
As reported by renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Depay is now set to make a surprising transition to Brazil, with Corinthians currently languishing in 17th place in Serie A.
This move could provide a fresh start for Depay, who has expressed a desire to return to form after facing trials in recent years.
Reflecting on his time at Manchester United, Depay opened up in a 2018 interview, exonerating former boss Jose Mourinho from blame.
“I never had a bad relationship with him,” Depay stated, revealing that he felt his style of play was not aligned with Mourinho’s preferences. He voiced his ambition, telling the manager, “you will see me at the top,” reinforcing his belief in his potential.
