Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) has been closed indefinitely following student unrest on Monday that disrupted academic activities.
In a memo signed by Acting Vice Chancellor Charity Gichuki, the university senate announced the closure, stating that all students must vacate the university campuses immediately.
“The University Senate during a special senate meeting held on 6th March 2023 at 1 pm deliberated on the disruption of University activities due to students’ unrest. Arising from this unrest, Senate resolved as follows; that the university be closed indefinitely. All students must leave all the university campuses with immediate effect,” the memo read in part.
The memo also stated that the 10th graduation ceremony scheduled for Saturday has been postponed until further notice.
The students’ unrest comes amid recent leadership changes at the university.
The university council fired Vice Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo last week for poor performance and replaced him with Gichuki.
Odhiambo had been the VC for five years, and his contract was set to expire this July.
