Michael Olunga set to buy Swedish club

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, through his academy, the Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA), is set to acquire debt-ridden Swedish third-tier club AFC Eskilstuna.

AFC Eskilstuna, home to Kenyan duo Henry Meja and Frank Odhiambo, is struggling financially, and Olunga is set to come to the team’s aid.

Olunga played in Sweden between 2016 and 2017 after leaving Gor Mahia for Djurgården.

According to Swedish publication Eskilstuna-Kuriren, Olunga is set to acquire the club and will also pay its debts, amounting to around KES 48 million.

Although Olunga is said to have no major interest in owning a club, he sees it as a good platform to expose the young talents he has been signing for his academy from schools and other clubs in Kenya.

AFC Eskilstuna is currently 11th on the table with 11 points after ten rounds of league games.

The contact with Olunga was reportedly made by former club sporting director Mikael Larsson, who left AFC earlier this year but is expected to return when Olunga completes the club’s acquisition.

Athletic Football Club Eskilstuna, also known as AFC Eskilstuna or simply AFC, is a Swedish professional football club based in Eskilstuna. The club has previously been known under the names FC Café Opera and Väsby United before switching ownership and identity in 2012 to AFC United.

During the 2016 season, they decided to switch their name, identity, and locality to Eskilstuna, about 110 kilometers west of Stockholm. They are now known as AFC Eskilstuna, competing in Ettan, the third-highest tier of Swedish football, and playing their home matches at Tunavallen.
