Military, NYS Take Over KEMSA

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Youth Service (NYS) have been tipped to take over operations at the ailing Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).

The government made the news through the agency’s head, Mary Chao Mwadime, who advised all non-core workers to take a 30-day leave while the body is restructured.

During this time, KEMSA’s activities will be managed by a small team made up of core personnel and other government agencies.

Within the notice period, staff will take a 30-day break to allow for their contracts to be reviewed and appraisal reports made.

Mwadime verified that the required measures had been taken to minimize unnecessary disruptions in service delivery and day-to-day operations.

The board claimed that it had undertaken an audit at the agency and discovered that some of the problems plaguing KEMSA will necessitate further investigation in three important areas: Governance, Processes, and Structures.

On the mass restructuring plan, KEMSA clarified that the staff will only go on leave to facilitate reorganization.

"The release of all staff to work from home is a procedural formality to facilitate the review of the organizational structure and will be undertaken expeditiously to ensure that the staff complement is fit for purpose and within the approved staff establishment levels." Mwadime added.
