The Ministry of Defence has officially taken over the construction of the long-stalled 64 Stadium in Eldoret, signalling renewed efforts by the government to complete one of Kenya’s key sports infrastructure projects.
Taking it to his social media accounts on Thursday, June 11, 2026, while visiting the stadium, the principal secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Patrick Mariru, has noted that the construction follows a directive by President William Ruto aimed at accelerating the completion of strategic national projects that have faced prolonged delays.

The stadium, whose construction had stalled for nearly three years, is now under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence, which has been tasked with ensuring its timely delivery. The PS has said that the construction will be done in 3 months.
“Also, this morning, I visited the 64 Stadium in Eldoret Town. This is one of the key sports infrastructure projects now under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence, following the directive of H.E. the President William Samoei Ruto,” Mariru said.

The 64 Stadium is among several sports facilities earmarked for upgrade and completion as Kenya positions itself to host major regional and international sporting events. Its prolonged delay had raised concerns among athletes, sports federations, and residents who had hoped the facility would boost sports development in the North Rift region.
The PS has expressed confidence that the involvement of the Ministry of Defence will help fast-track construction and eliminate bottlenecks that had previously slowed progress.
“Construction of the stadium had stalled for nearly three years. We shall restart work and deliver the facility in under three months,” he added.

Once completed, the stadium is expected to provide a modern venue for athletics, football, and other sporting disciplines, while also supporting talent development and economic activity in Eldoret and the wider Uasin Gishu County.
The move underscores the government’s growing reliance on the Ministry of Defence to implement critical infrastructure projects, leveraging its engineering capacity and project management expertise to ensure efficient delivery.
