MOH To Deploy 100,000 Community Health Promoters in an Effort to Prevent HIV

Kenya has made great strides in the fight against HIV, most notably in the area of lifelong antiretroviral treatment (ART), having doubled the number of patients on such medication, and launching a Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) programme that has seen a 64% adoption.

Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni Muriuki stressed the government’s commitment to developing robust public health systems based on community-led processes during a stakeholders’ conference in Nairobi today.

The goal is to boost accessibility, strengthen social accountability, and improve the quality of healthcare.

Establishing Primary Healthcare Networks (PCNs) and deploying 100,000 Community Health Promoters are two of the strategies used in this method to increase community involvement.

The goal of the meeting wasvto create a cohesive strategy for the long-term development of patient-centric systems for HIV prevention and curative services.

Participating parties included the Ministry of Health, UNAIDS, Council of Governors, PEPFAR, Kenya Red Cross, and Amref Health Africa.
