Kenya Eager For Tobacco-Free Future Through Implementation Of WHO-FCTC Protocol

The State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards’ Principal Secretary, Mary Muthoni, called a multisectoral conference to coordinate the implementation of two major international treaties: the WHO-FCTC Protocol to Eliminate Illegal Trade in Tobacco Products.

This occurs when Kenya deals with the issue of new tobacco products and the Tobacco Control Act’s implementation.

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 15 duties are expanded upon by the protocol, an international treaty.

A number of other topics are covered by the treaty as well, including as the regulation and disclosure of components in tobacco products, the sale of tobacco products to minors or by them, treatment for tobacco addiction, research and information exchange between nations, and raising public awareness.

These international accords, which are currently incorporated into Kenya’s Tobacco Control Act of 2007 and implemented through the National Tobacco Control Strategy Plan and the Tobacco Control Regulations, are essential in the fight against the tobacco industry’s constant change.

The country is more determined than ever to fight this danger and shield its people from the health hazards of tobacco usage.

According to the PS, this cooperative effort marks a turning point in Kenya’s tobacco control efforts and opens the door to a healthier, smoke-free future.
