Moi Girls Alumna Makes History as First Female Officer of Military Guard of Honour

In a landmark achievement for gender equality within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Lieutenant Colonel Faith Mwagandi became the first female senior officer to lead a military Guard of Honour during the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Sunday.

This significant milestone highlights Mwagandi’s remarkable career and the strides women are making in the Kenyan military.

Lt. Col. Mwagandi’s journey began in 2007 when she enrolled at the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet. Known for her trailblazing spirit, she made history as the first female Warship Commander in East Africa, successfully commanding the Kenya Navy Ship (KNS) Shujaa from 2019 to 2022. Her leadership and determination have earned her respect and recognition within the military community.

Throughout her distinguished career, Mwagandi has pursued academic excellence, earning a diploma in Military Science and later a degree from Egerton University. Her training includes an esteemed stint at the Britannia Royal Naval College in the UK, further enhancing her expertise.

Mwagandi has also served on various Kenya Navy vessels, including KNS Galana and KNS Shupavu, and has played a pivotal role at the Kenya Navy Training School. Notably, she acted as the Principal Warfare Officer on a crucial voyage to the Netherlands for the midlife refit of KNS Shujaa.

An alumna of Moi Girls Eldoret and a former student at Kenyatta University, Mwagandi’s military career began unexpectedly when she responded to a KDF cadet recruitment advertisement.

Her journey serves as an inspiration to many, exemplifying the breaking of barriers for women in leadership roles within the armed forces.
