Moi University to Auction Donkeys, Tyres, and Pigs in Unusual Fundraising Drive

Written By Joyce Nzomo

Moi University has announced the public auction of livestock, used tyres, and a vehicle in a bid to raise much-needed funds amid growing financial pressures.

The auction, scheduled for Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 9:30 AM, will take place at the university’s Transport Department yard and farm yard in Kesses, Uasin Gishu County.

The notice, signed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut, has sparked national attention due to the unusual range of items up for sale.

Among the listed items are: 19 bulls and bull calves, priced between Ksh 7,000 and Ksh 70,000, 10 donkeys, ranging from Ksh 6,000 to Ksh 15,000, four German Shepherd dogs, each valued at Ksh 40,000, 10 pigs, priced between Ksh 3,500 and Ksh 7,000, 3 used tyres, each tagged at Ksh 12,000, 1 Toyota Hilux pickup, going for Ksh 350,000

Prospective buyers are required to place a refundable deposit of Ksh 2,000 for animals and items, and Ksh 20,000 for the vehicle. Bidders risk losing their deposit if they fail to complete payment.

The university has invited public viewing of the items from Friday, June 20 to Monday, June 23, daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

While asset disposal is not new for public institutions, the inclusion of donkeys and German Shepherds has raised eyebrows and become a talking point across campuses and social media.

Once a leading academic powerhouse, the institution has struggled in recent years with budget cuts, stalled projects, and staff unrest—factors that have forced a rethink of traditional revenue models.
