Mombasa Business Owner Arrested After Shooting At Protesters

Police in Mombasa have arrested and detained a man after he allegedly shot and injured two people during the anti-government protests on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

The man who is said to be the owner of the Qaffee Point hotel in Ganjoni, Mombasa drew his weapon and fired at protestors who had allegedly attempted to vandalise the property.

In videos and images shared with Now.co.ke, the hotelier could be seen wielding his gun as he repelled protestors who were throwing stones at him and the property.

A section of Kenyans raised concerns, alerting police that two individuals had suffered gunshot wounds, prompting a response from security agencies.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since announced that the suspect was arrested, disarmed and placed in custody.

“The reported two persons who suffered injuries are receiving medical aid, and we pray that they will recuperate fast,” the DCI revealed.

“The DCI thanks members of the public who acted fast to assist the injured to hospital, and at the same time appeals to Mombasa people to be calm on this case as necessary legal action is being taken”.

Following the three-week anti-government protests and damage of public and private property witnessed across the country, a section of businessmen have resorted to unorthodox means to safeguard their investments.

In Nairobi, businessmen along Luthuli Avenue hired men armed with clubs among other crude weapons to protect their shops from looting.
